The Final Fantasy XIV Collector’s Edition now has access to the live game, and the regular edition will be able to go in game on September 30th, so I thought that I’d take a quick minute to take a look at how things are shaping up so far.
It’s a little hard to tell at this point, as “head start” times never stress the servers as much as the live launch, but so far, I haven’t heard of anything major going wrong in game, although the first live patch has been released. We’ll see how things go on the 30th once the rest of the players can get into the game.
What worries me, and might worry you, about FF XIV is the pricing structure. It has a $12.99/month cost, but this subscription is for a pretty basic account. It only includes one player character, and one “retainer”, which is a non-players character that helps the player out by offering in-game merchant services and free item storage. For each additional playable character, you will need to pay $3.00/month up to a maximum of 8 playable characters, and for each retaineryou will need to pay $1.00.
As a confirmed alt-aholic, this worries me because if I want to try out all of the different classes, I will need to pay $21 a month just for the playable character, on top of my regular subscription. That’s $33.99 per month, and that’s not including any extra retainers! I can understand games that are Free to Play charging for extra character slots, but to pay on top of a subscription to have more than one character? In my opinion this is not something that I’m ok with. I’m going to be keeping an eye on this game, to see what the community reaction to this pricing model is.
What are you thoughts on the pricing model? Have you been in game yet and seen any big problems? Let us know!
