I had a similar reaction to SWG. Before it came out, I was getting interested in MMO’s and looked for one to play. I was very interested in SWG because I am a big Star Wars fan; saw the original movie over thirty times in the theater. When it came out, a friend of mine got it and upon watching him play for awhile, I decided that it it looked like Star Wars, sounded like Star Wars, and played like Everquest or something, NOTHING like Star Wars. So I never played it.

I analyze the various F2P business models this way: how do they make more money? In LOTRO, it looks like they make more money by putting out expansions, quest packs, skirmishes (ie, content); horses and cosmetic items (appearance). Cosmetics for other players don’t harm my experience any, and content is what I want and need as a player, so I like that they’re motivated to create more quality content to get paid! Other games seem to make more money of consumables (XP increases, etc)… so they make more money by making the content so grindy you’ll want to pay not to have to play it so much? Not a good incentive…

Ok, I need to correct you two about Guild Wars (a small thing, but still). Guild Wars only has one expansion: Eye of the North. Then it has three stand-alone campaigns that interact with each other: Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall. Each campaign is a full game all its own. After you’ve leveled so far, you can take your character to one of the other campaigns if you own it and gain those skills, armors, etc. there. But you don’t have to. An expansion denotes content that cannot stand on its own without a base game. For those three campaigns, that doesn’t hold true.

I am gonna have to say that I agree… I LOVE longer podcasts… I love it when people get into the meat of the matter, and you guys are entertaining. TOO LONG? NEVER!
