DCUO adds new power style and content in their new DLC
Jul 13th
The recently announced “Fight for the Light” DLC pack for DC Universe Online will give comic book and gaming fans the opportunity to play a superhero with the power type we’ve been waiting for: Light. Not only will players be able to conjure physical manifestation constructed from their imagination, but they will also be able to travel to new locals, including S.T.A.R. Labs and Coast City (the home of Hal Jordan – The Green Lantern).
For those of you who haven’t followed Green Lantern (or watched the recent movie), this superhero is able to construct anything that he can imagine out of light that comes from his ring, which is powered by the lantern that came with it. The champion of Oa fights his foes with gatling guns of light and barriers of photons. This makes him one of the most difficult heroes to bring to the gaming world, as his powers are hard to define. It seems that SOE has found a way to do it however, as we’ll be able to have our heroes fight with light soon enough.
According to PC Gamer, players will be able to add this power styler to any of their existing level 30 or higher characters, although the option to start a character with these abilities will also be available. Players will also decide which combat style they want, from the existing styles available in game. This combination, along with the powers that players will be able to choose, will allow players to either take a DPS or Control role.
I’m really excited by the prospect of playing a light based character. I’ve always been a fan of Green Lantern, although I do tend to lean towards Guy Gardner rather than the traditional Hal Jordan variant. The idea of pulling out a giant chainsaw and going to town on my enemies DCUO is a very action heavy MMO, and these new powers will fight right into the community very nicely.
See you in-game!

I fire grenades at all my enemies, light then on fire then blow them up. Why yes, I am a hero - why do you ask?
DC Universe Online Review – Phase 1
I had initially planned to write one giant review for DCUO. My goal is to try to be as thorough as I can by reaching level 30 and experiencing as much of the game as possible. Unfortunately by the time that happens I think many of you would read that and say, “Seems like an odd time to review DCUO considering DCUO 3 has just been announced”. So here is my pledge – I will post several mini-reviews as I progress through the game. This review is being written as I sit with my main character at level 16. More >

DC Universe Online – First Impressions (Beta)
Jan 2nd
I jumped on the opportunity to take part in the DC Universe online beta when Massively was giving away keys. I will do a more thorough writeup on the game later once I’ve logged some more significant hours, but I wanted to throw out some of the things I’ve noticed about the game early on.
First off, the character creation is quite detailed. You can customize enough of your costume without it becoming overwhelming, while still creating a unique look for yourcharacter. As a note, you don’t have to go overboard on your default gear customization because the gear your pick up throughout the game can adjust how you look in game fairly easily. It’s also easy to reset your look back to the default you created in the beginning.
The first thing any PC player of DCUO will notice is that the controls are not designed for the PC. In fact, if you have a decent gamepad, it might be worthwhile to try to hook it up and use it to run this game. The typical WASD+mouselook style of controls that most people are used to simply will not work in this game. If you get stuck in that mode of thinking while trying to control your character, you will become frustrated quickly, especially if you’re using directional abilities (e.g. Fireball) instead of targeted abilities (e.g. firing pistols). It took me 10 minutes or so to start to get used to it, and I don’t think I’ve mastered it completely yet. When you throw in the flight ability it becomes even trickier. I have yet to find a way to customize the controls to feel more “at-home”.
The combat is more complicated than your typical MMO. You likely won’t get away with standing still and blowing through a rotation – you will have to learn to use your movement abilities in combat and to be able to line up your directional attacks. I think most people will pick up it well enough to be able to win at basic fights, but it will take a long time to truly master.
The starting area was a very fun experience. As a tutorial it is really very basic, but the game doesn’t have you performing useless tasks in order to teach you how to push your buttons. I rolled up a disciple of Superman with flight powers, and I imagine the beginning must be different based on whether you’re a hero or villain and who you’re a disciple of. I think the travel power must make a difference too, because there’s a few sections where I don’t see super speed or acrobatics really working. The starting area is fairly quick – it won’t take more than 10 or 15 minutes to play through before you get to your starting city. I also got to fight alongside Superman, which means that I can cross that off my bucket list.
More to come later – this is certainly a game worth checking out.
