Lead systems designer, Ghostcrawler, made a post friday regarding a change coming to the “Luck of the Draw” buff, and it’s drawn a… mixed reaction from the community. I am going to give my thoughts on the change as well. You can read the entire post from GC here.

My initial reaction was surprise. Honestly, I had completely forgotten about the existance of Luck of the Draw, but once I saw the name I remembered seeing it at some point when I dungeoned through the LFD. Admittedly, I don’t go through the dungeon finder very much anymore, but that’s neither here nor there. I am not against the random queueing… on the contrary, I think it was one of the best things to make it live in the game.

When the dungeon finder was implemented, the “Luck of the Draw” buff seemed a bit unnecessary. Wrath’s dungeons weren’t anything resembling difficult at that point in time, everyone overgeared them, and if you could press your aoe button, you could successfully dps your way through a random heroic. Obviously, times have changed. There are almost no real opportunities for mindless aoe, bosses hit hard, healers struggle a bit more with mana, and in general people aren’t outgearing the content.

Personally, I don’t understand the negatives that people bring up in regards to this change. If you don’t have enough fellow guildies on to fully stock a dungeon, then you get the benefit of this buff and have a better chance of succeeding. If you have enough people willing to run with, then chances are you won’t need the buff because you’ll be better coordinated. There’s benefits to knowing how your group members will work, and that can easily counteract a 5-15% stat increase to me.
